have you tried gerbils? although can be hard to get them off them once they get started!!

Apparently she was on defrost gerbils and hamsters before, however i am reluctant to try these because i breed my own rodents and would prefer to use mice or rats.

Well i would just feed her on the gerbils or hamsters if i were you m8, as some food is better then none Wink

Then you can gradualy wean her off by scenting which i am sure your aware of ?

Perhaps you're right. Better the inconvenience than a hungry snake. I'll try to feed her a live mouse after she's shed cos she's had Avipro. Beyond that, i'll try a gerbil.

i'd prefer to go down the gerbil/hamster route rather than a live mouse.

live food can do a lot of damage to snakes if they don't eat it straight away so make sure you don't leave the mouse in the royals vivarium for any length of time without constantly watching it.

Can honestly say that this does not look like a snake that was 'fine' 3 days ago to me.

It would take far longer for the animal to lose enough weight to be in this state.

It's a shame for you that your snake likes a food item that is inconvenient to you, but to my mind you should stop concentrating on what you would rather it ate and feed it what it likes.

Get it to the vets and get it sorted.

I think that it says a lot for the people on this forum that they have been so polite in their replies given the state of this animal. My hats off to you folks.

I find your post quite offensive if i'm honest.

Why would i say she was fine three days ago if she wasn't. I put this thread up for help not criticism.
As many people have said royal pythons wont eat if they dont want to and if no dramatic weight loss is observed then dont worry. This is the first sign that anything is wrong with her. I discovered her in this state and immediately took pics and posted. Surely if she'd been in this state last time she was checked i would not have left her a further three days before asking for help/opinions. I do agree that this problem must have manifested itself over a longer period than three days, however, it was not apparent until 5 minutes before i posted.
I accept that the condition of this snake may appear to be down to poor husbandry but may it be noted that all my others are in fine health (touch wood) and this is an isolated case.
The fact that i have not offered her gerbils or hamsters is not because i couldn't be arsed or because i thought i knew better or because i'm a selfish uncarely reptile keeper. I have tried other options before coming to the conclusion that gerbils may be the best way. It's not like i haven't tried to feed her.

Frankly i find your remarks both condescending and insulting.

Your order of prey items is as I am trying, although i havent tried live rats. I will be tring live mice as soon as she has shed.

Quote:
you cannot expect a royal to switch prey items at the drop of a hat, they just dont do that sort of thing, especially with gerbils.

I agree at the drop of a hat however, I've tried, obviously not worked so the next stage is necessary i.e gerbils.

Quote:
Once you get it feeding steadily, THEN start thinking about converting to a prey item that is more convenient.

I agree, hindsight is wonderful!

Quote:
How long have you had this animal? Has it eaten since you got it?

I've had it around 4 months i think, not eaten for me. Like i have said previosly, no dramatic weight loss observed.

Quote:
Temps? Weights for the last 4 months?

My internet access at home is unreliable to say the least so couldn't post last night. Will try again tonight or will post tomoro from work

Quote:
Avipro is good but dont rely on it to start the animal feeding, its not magic powder, its just a probiotic.

Not depending as it hasnt worked yet, just trying an alternative option.

Quote:
955i was not trying to be condescending or insulting, he clearly has very strong opinions on this subject, as do you. lets keep this thread on the subject of how to help you and not descend into petty arguments.

My intention was not to descend to argument rather to defend my care towards my animals. His final point of 'I think that it says a lot for the people on this forum that they have been so polite in their replies given the state of this animal. My hats off to you folks.' was what got my goat.

Poor snake, i'd be attempting the gerbils or hamsters now definitely.

One of our males, looks like an old one, not sure of his age, but he has a giant head, and weighs 1840g (without a belly full of food), and he can look underweight at times, but he usually refuses larger meals (or spits out medium or large rats), so we feed him small rats and large rat weaners. Your snake does look very underweight, i've never seen a snake look that skinny before. A trip to the vets might help her, they might be able to assist feed her something at least, i wouldn't leave this much longer now. Try getting some frozen or live gerbils or something as well. I'd say on eggmans list you're on the defrost/live gerbils area now. I don't even know if our girl looked that skinny after dropping eggs.
