Well it's getting even closer now that I have both my male and female cresties but I just have a couple more questions about breeding.

My male is now 29g and my female is a massive 44g so she is of breeding weight isn't she? Would you say that they should get put together when they are maybe closer together in weight? Maybe when he hits 35g.

Also what are everyone's views on separating them for maybe a couple of months over winter?

I'm not completely sure on this so would be good to get someone elses opinion on this as well, but the female is definately ready to breed, and I'm sure I've read somewhere that the male should be around 30g, so they could be ok to breed. But like I've said, I'm not 100% so would be best to get another opinion on that.

It's not essential to seperate them, just drop the temperatures to around the mid-high 60s, though if you want to and have the space, seperating would make sure there is no breeding at all.

Are they more or less the same size in length? I have found that male Cresteds always tend to be on the long thin side (ie. same length as the females but not as heavy). When I bred Cresteds my male was 38 grams and my females were 50 and 52 grams. He looked like a skinny weed next his females.

Regarding keeping them together, I don't for two reasons. Firstly, for my own health reasons I live in a warm house so can't drop the temperature too much during the winter months. Secondly, and more importantly in my opinion, it gives the females a break. When I bred them I only put the male in with the females for a week to ten days. He did his job and I got a seasons worth of fertile eggs out of the one mating period. On occasion the first clutch of the next season were from the previous years mating (which was at least ten months prior).

Well I want them to live together but I did read that it could be dangerous to the female to leave her in there for the full year with him. So I thought of maybe giving her a cooling period over the winter as I don't quite know if the temperature drop in my house would be enough to stop mating. I do have them in seperate tanks now and so when I move the female in with the male I would always have a spare if they needed to be split up for a bit.

She does seem a lot fatter than he is so I think I'll give it another couple of weeks and see how he is compared with her then.
