I know this is a case of after the horse has gone - but what about just putting some fine netting over the top?

This would discourage birds etc - and you could always rig the edge to a concealed alarm system if it's the neighbour...

You've got my email address, let me know if you want any - I've still a few square feet of black aquatic netting, you can have some if you want.
