of course very very very nice, instead of the spenceris ( i don´t like them so much like other guys) . but crocdoc still got the point in my opinion . giganteus is the only number one, after that varius and then cumingi and salvadorii. regards martin _________________ keeping: Varanus:

Well to tell you the truth I prefer the Australian species of the sub genus varanus. This is partly because of how they look and also how they behave. They are full of character, I think people who have kept or are keeping will know exactly what I mean.
The only none Australians I like are cumingi and griseus, both these I have experience with. Cumingi is very hard work and messy like most tropical varanids, if you are lucky enough to get hold of the Mindanao type then they do look cool.
Salvadorii I do not like at all, it looks like a mish mash of many species put together. That big head is not my cup of tea I prefer much long sleak slender head like some of the Aussie forms. I hope I haven't offended you croc keepers out there!!
Yes spenceri and giganteus for me too!! |

@ sean
i thought the same way about salvadorii till one year ago. than i saw one the first time in reality. since that day, i like them very much. but they are not on the top of my list of monitors in general. but if you only take the "big boy´s" then my list would be
giganteus
.
varius
.
.
.
cumingi/panoptes panoptes ( i love my big dude, he is so amazing !!!! )
.

I have seen them in the flesh and it still does not make any difference to me. They simply do not appeal to me at all.
I do not have an order of such but probably I would consider the following.
spenceri
giganteus
panoptes ( all 3 sub-species )
flavirufus and types
varius
glauerti in the dwarfs
brevicauda but that would be for different reasons |

Hi all.
Prasinus & macraei, all the way for me. although Ackies take some beating for ease of care, entertainment & temprement, the ideal captive monitor in my opinion. |
