I am going to be venturing into keeping snakes again soon. The problem is that it have been such a long time since I kept a snake! No one carry thermostats anymore unfortunately in this town. I realize that I could order them online, but I would have to order the thermostat from the States, in order to get them in Canada.
What is the safest way to heat a plastic tub on a dimmer? Heat mat, heat tape or heat cable?
I know I used to keep a human heat pad and bulbs on a thermostat a long time ago, but that was a different story back then. I never used a heat tape, heat mat or heat cable before. |

have you tried http://www.portcreditpets.com/, it's a Canadian dealer, sells online.
With regards to just using a dimmer, I'd be very nervous, especially if there are big temps extremes during the day/night.
I do have a heat cable wired onto a dimmer that I use for one of my racks, that doesn't have a thermostat BUT the room is extremely temp stable and controlled by air con units but even with that I 'dial' the temps almost every day.
The room is being updated soon and that rack will be the first to have a stat fitted _________________

Yep. Most of the online dealers just have rheostats, even the ones with thermostats carry brands that are less reliable than the rheostats themselves.
Usually we are suppose to get duty-free shipping with pet supplies, but Customs think that reptile thermostats are just like the home thermostats and charge quite a bit for them. Stupid eh?
I don't mind checking the temperature in the morning, then when I come back from work, before and after dinner then before bed -- I do have a thermostat regulating the room temperature.
I read that some herp keepers gotten away by keeping a tray of water with aquarium heaters in them to get a stable temperature -- which the logic behind it baffle me. I would much rather trust a regularly-checked dimmer and a controlled heated room than an aquarium heater. |
