Just wondering what those of you who house snakes in plastic tubs or vivs use to keep them smelling fresh. Ive noticed my really usefulls tend to start smelling a bit fousty inside even though there given a good scrubbing every week.

im convinced its due to the overall high humidity steve. the moistness just makes the insides smell abit off between cleanings. I know there are vivarium deodorisers available but do they actually work? _________________ 0.0.1 Biak Green tree python

High humidity may be the reason but plastic should not hold to much stench once cleaned bud . Have you cleaned the holes you drilled out ? They may be holding the stench .or perhaps the lid is holding the stench .
Ile be having a good sniff of mine tomorrow when i clean mine out maybe i have missed it ?!?
I personally would'nt use any products, tbh i only wash mine with warm water and leave to drip dry , In case the snakes have a reaction to detergent etc.. Some people use bleach ? try that maybe but a very light solution may help you out .

i remember the post of your set up.
the plastic you are using is slightly porous allowing some smell and even some bacteria to live inside.
there are only a handful of plastics companies that make and sell plastic tubs that are suitable to house animals in.
most of them are just general storage containers.
and although they are great for holding t shirts and footballs, maybe not the best for holding animals due to the quality of the plastic. _________________ cardboard city. |

If they were mine I would be inclined to sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda in the bottom of the tubs, this absorbs most odours effectively. _________________ -Hannah- |

think about it.
boxes that are used for storage as opposed to storing animals, why would they make them to a standard you can keep live animals in.
when these boxes are made, formaldehyde is also one the ingredients put in the plastic to make them strong and able to support weight and not break. which of course as you know, is also what they fill your body with after all your blood is drained when you die. its a preservative.
when you heat these plastic boxes, small amounts of the chemical are breathed in causing respiratory problems and eventually death. maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but it DRASTICALLY decreases the life expectancy on things that are kept in them.
on top of that, ones that are made FOR ANIMALS will have a special coating on the inside, sort of like a water proofing to keep things like blood, feces, and spoiled water from being absorbed into the plastic and thus...creating a bad smell.
they are a cheap alternative to doing things correctly. and although they are efficient, they are still not the best thing for your animals.
its like fixing your car with duct tape. _________________ cardboard city. |

Ditto. judging by the amount in use there cant be much wrong with them.
Vivarium temperatures are nowhere near high enough to start causing the chemical release you speak of chris. I can imagine bolting a ceramic directly to the tub may over heat the plastic but surely people are only using appropriate heaters. reptile radiators in my case.
Steve im cleaning mine with soapy water followed by a good rinse. fresh newspaper every couple of days and so on. Ive got a feeling ive found the culprit. Its a certain piece of bog wood i had in one of the tubs (i think) Since replacing it with a piece of cork bark last night the smell is all but gone _________________ 0.0.1 Biak Green tree python
