Hi, i have 3 mellers giant chameleons with a little horn. The male is on his own, and 2 females together until theyre bigger. The male is trying to get out at the top and keeps ramming his horn against the metal mesh. His horn has started bleeding where he has done this- should I use a cotton bud to dry up the blood etc, and how can I stop him ramming his head up? he is about a foot long inc tail at the mo, and Im purchasing some old wardrobes soon to kit up into a bigger viv for them each to have. Thanks, ratmolfe

Is the top screen or mesh? You can install PVC coated 1/2 by 1 inch to prevent this type of grinding

Apply tamodene or similar to the wound to prevent infection.

Then I would suggest checking all aspects of the chameleons housing / husbandry and environment to ensure everything is 100% correct. As your chameleon is exhibiting stress.

Sadly CF / WC imported chameleons do not allways adapt at all well to captivity. The ill affects of non adaptation can take up to a year to fully show up. Your chameleon sounds as though he is extremely stressed this can be very harmful to a chameleons health and lead to their demise.

I would also ensure that your chameleons have been treated for worms and faecal samples have been taken. The reason being, that imported chams are high risk for parasitic load. In the wild parasites dont usually overly adversely affect the chameleons health. But when a chameleon is under stress then the parasitic load can take over and cause harm. Hence why I mention it as your male cham is exhibiting signs of high level stress.

No doubt a responsible captive farmer, importer, dealer, would have sorted such matters out? For the welfare of the chameleon. From my experience gaining such actual evidence of this is hard work. Sorry not being cynical just speaking from experience!

I sincerely hope that your chameleon settles and adapts for his well being and happiness.
