Well after looking like she was fit to burst for the past week or so one of my female carpet chams has finally deposited her eggs.

They are notorious egg scatterers so I covered the viv floor in laying medium.

She has for the last few days been digging in all four corners of the viv. So in the end I built her a high compact damp mound in one corner and stuck loads of twigs in it all the way to the base of the viv. To replicate tree roots as they like to lay the eggs near tree / bush roots as the roots help to maintain moisture around them in the soil in the wild. Also when the eggs hatch the babies have a nearby bush / tree to climb to get to safety.

She has laid 15 wee eggs, she can have some small waxies now to celebrate! Laughing

Thanks everyone. Mum Carpet is fine well hydrated and active. Will give her lots of calcium and nice food for next few weeks to build her up.

I am glad she has finally laid to. In the pics a week or so back she was carrying the eggs quite high, she actually thinned down a bit as the eggs moved towards her vent area, as they did you could very clearly see the outline of the eggs against her skin. The clutch size I beleive for a carpet is between 4-23 eggs, so 15 eggs is a good result.

As a side note; spring is definitely in the air most of my adult female panther chameleons are all showing signs of being receptive, so I have been pairing them up, lots of mating activity in the Rick household at the moment!

Some Carpet info below in relation to egg laying etc.

Egg Laying: After choosing a suitable egg laying spot, the female dig a hole in the soil approximately 10cm deep where she will lay between 4 and 23 eggs, which she will then cover with dirt.

Care of Eggs / Young
Incubation Temperature: Carpet Chameleon eggs should be artificially incubated in slightly moist vermiculite. A cool phase is needed during egg incubation: 25C for the first 45 days, 15C for 40 days, then 28C until hatching (around 100 days following the end of the cool phase).
Incubation / Gestation Time: Gestation lasts 30 to 50 days.
Size at Birth: 3cm SVL.
Hatchling Sex Ratio: 50% male - 50% female, with the above incubation procedure.
