How much room does a Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus) need?
I know it grows to be about 40" long. It is an diurnal insectivorous snake, meaning that it will be very active.
I am thinking of starting up a planted vivarium with a stream bed. I can provide the vertical space of 8', but I just need to know how much horizontal space it need. |

8' ???
Is that 8 inches or 8 feet ?
For an active arborial 40in snake I would provide a 48in x 24in x 24 in BUT for a rough green which rarely grows more than 30in, usually around 24in, I would get a 36in x 18in x 18in and this will be enough to also do a bit of landscaping. I would also think that you could fit up 3 or 4 rough greens in this size tank as they are very thin almost like a bootlace _________________ People laugh at me because I am different

Yep. 8 feet.
I got a couple of 8 feet vivariums in my house. I know, I am crazy. It is more of -- just because I can. That and I keep open vivariums and my friends used to put stuff in there before I extended them. My next build is going to be closed.
Anyway, thanks. I will consider that. So... I am looking at a 120 gallon or 125 gallon tank. If I keep multiple herps in the same vivarium, I like to give them their own personal space. So... what I probably end up doing is tripling the length for three of them. |
