I have been thinking how best to support the hobby of chameleon keeping and how best to promote said hobby. I had an idea at 3am this morning. As you do Laughing

Very brief formative outline of ideas below , I have not worked out the finite details yet.

Here is a copy of an add I placed on the Captive bred Classifieds, the purpose of the add is gauge the level of interest. Please tell me what you think folks, thanks.

Chameleon Breeders:

Are you interested in joining a new Chameleon data base?

In brief the purpose of the data base is: To contain information on UK Captive bred chameleons, to ensure unrelated bloodlines are available for future breeding projects, to source new bloodlines, to progress the hobby of Chameleon keeping in the UK, to provide valuable information resources on all aspects of chameleon husbandry including breeding.

Also to include a programme of buying, selling and breeding swaps for all members. Members will be able to collectively advertise from this database, the data base, in part, will also be open for general public viewing and will support a one stop Chameleon buying opportunity for all.

Sounds great Rick. I don't know why this hasn't been done before! I think there is a similar scheme in Europe and one in the States-could possibly link with them further down the line?

Excellent...the great thing with this is that rare captive species can be managed so that the country doesn't run out of healthy genetic individuals. This might remove the impact of wild-catching projects....? It sounds like it would work well for all involved (breeders, keepers and chameleons).

needs to be done if captive breeding of the rarer species is taken seriously. sounds like a good plan.

Good idea Rick, good luck if you go ahead!
Could also help put our hobby in better light, showing the benefits for conservation!

Thanks for the responses. Yes Louise there are such Databases in Europe and the States, and who knows a link up, if it goes ahead, would be great for the futre if it's possible.

I think as folk have stated that the rare species breeding programmes could benefit enormously from such a scheme, in turn this would also help in a small way towards conservation of such species. Just one aspect of this would be sharing of information and knowledge on such issues as captive husbandry.

Worth finding out if there is enough interest out there to make it viable.

sounds like a grate idea to me.It would help a lot with panthers to make sure that you don't get any mixing between Locales as well.
