Hello everyone, please can I have your thoughts on a problem that I have. Last Friday I bought a Snow Corn from a reputable Shop who told me that it was a female because it had been chased around the viv., by a male. I asked for the snake to be probed, and the probe went in 4 scale lengths, and that they said was definitely female. However.....

I am sure that most of you have, like me, had a male snake that when probed 'clenched', and so the probe did not go in properly. I have a male - now proven - Mid Baja Rosy Boa who was probed as female, by incidentally the same chap who probed this Snow Corn..... Also, when I put the new Corn in with my definitely male normal colour Corn, the normal boy did indeed chase the Snow around the viv., but it did not look to be mating behavior, rather territorial male aggression. Next I measured the tail lengths, and the tails are almost the same length, even though the Snow is 2/3 the size of my really large normal boy.

Rang the shop up and to give them their due, they said to bring it back for a refund, but it is a round trip of almost 50 miles - again. Really cross, BUT, could it be a girl ? If so I really want to keep it as I have too many boys without girls. I am attaching photos of the snake / tail, all thoughts would be most welcome as I want to breed corns, as well as the Hoggies, Rosy Boas and Pine x Albino Bull projects.

Bye the way am I allowed to mention that I would love to sell or swap my 6.5' Boa Constrictor Cyrus as I need the viv., space ? He is puppy-tame. Last years photo of him attached. I am looking for female corn !!!! , male king.

Cant tell from the pics, but by the sound of it you have two males. They will chase each other around the viv 'jerking' in the same way a male will chase a female, only it will be quite obvious that they are not exactly in tune, but trying to best each other. If it was a female, the 'jerking' behaviour is much more 'together' and will end in actual mating.

From the photo I would say female, males are usually almost parallel near the vent not tapered, especially at that size.

Sexing from photos is a bit of a gamble though.

Cheers

Confused A couple of days ago I bought a female amel het for anery, and took the Snow with me for them to probe. They said that the Snow is definitely female.... Sooooo, I well may have to ring the original shop up to apologise for doubting them. The Snow sloughed yesterday and is now roaming around the viv., so am putting a laying box in with it. Does not look, or feel gravid though.

Has anyone had a corn that did not look or feel gravid that did nevertheless lay an egg or two ? If nothing happens within ten days or so, I will try putting a definite male in with it again.

Thank you to everyone who has been offering advice - if eggs are laid I will post photos.....!!!!! Shocked

As i am an aspiring breeder i believe that to tell the sex it depends on the size of the tail. If the tail is long and tapered it is a Male but if the tail is short and more fatter it is a Female corn. To me, the snake in the picture looks like it is a Female but it is not clearly visible. The only thing to do is to pop the snake but you need proffessional help as this can damage the snake, If you see a red short penis it is male but if you can't see anything it is female. I hope that you have found my information helpful and hope your breeding works out well. !!!THANKS!!! Very Happy [/quote]

I'm awful, I can never feel eggs, hubby can, guess I'm just not that sensitive lol

I also hate sexing from photos, I have 2 proven females here, who's tails could not be more different...but defo female.

And yes probing can go wrong too......but glad you have a female and good luck with the breeding.

Well, bless her little cotton socks, it is a she. She laid a lot of slugs probably because she and the males had been overwintered in a pet shop and so not brumated. At least I know that I have a female, very pleased. Now feeding her up to brumate this coming winter. Thanks for all of your help.
