i just took this..... its so nice to have her ID'd. as a yemen she'd be a sickly little thing, but as a mediterranean cham she's thriving!

I have 2 identical bought at doncaster ihs show as veiled and was also worried about their very small size compared to another veiled I have thats much younger but 4 times their size.
Thats saved me worrying.

it's not easy to find information on their endangered status online... either that or i don't know where to look. i'm really angry now. the breeder told me she was a cb veiled cham... i talked to him for a while before i bought her and i thought he seemed trustworthy. i never would've bought a wc if i knew, and i'm really upset at the idea that she probably is. i want to report the guy i bought her from. he had maybe 10 of these babies, all looked around the same size/age. is this something that's being done now? maybe its cheaper to import and buy wc common chams than it is to breed yemens?

I very much doubt that your cham is CB. However it is not your fault, you bought in good faith off this guy. Considering how cheap Yemen babies are, average price £35 the guy must have got these for peanuts, if they are endangered then they are an illegal shipment and not Cities approved.

In answer to your question it is overall cheaper to import wild caught or captive farmed than it is to breed most chameleons. Chameleon breeding is hard work and costly and very time consuming. I cant see a legal importation though being cheaper in the case of Yemens. Which are quite prolific. May well be the guy knew what he had and wanted rid quick, without advertising what they truly were for obvious reasons, who knows this is all conjecture. But possibly dodgy to say the least. Hard to make a judgement without the sellers viewpoint.

WC and CF simply do not do so well in captivity as true captive bred herps. True CB will usually be more expensive but you get what you pay for. You bought in good faith and were given reassurances by the seller as to the speices you thought you were buying. Misleading to say the least unless the seller was ignorant of what he was selling. Did he have other chameleons for sale, if so were they African species do you know?

the only chams i saw him selling when i bought kameal were from the batch i thought were all yemens. im pretty sure he had a few older yemens with him too though not sure if those were for sale or just for show...

All very odd isn't it. I asked if he had any other African species as if they were an import these may have inadvertently been imported with them. Who knows. But a chameleon dealer / trader / breeder should know what a baby Yemen's is.

he had to know. i talked to him, asked when they were born and all, and he didnt bat an eyelash. he probably got them cheap and was trying to unload them fast, like you said. so frustrating. i can't tell a baby yemen from what she was, even now comparing pix they look the same. but he had to know.
