you only get bit if you smell like food. A friend was chewed by one. It let go after a while.
Some people think it is what they eat Toads etc which gives them some venom. If CB and fed mice there is possibly no venom(dont test)
If there is no smell of food mine strike at me with mouth closed. Once I have got hold they are fine. If there is mouse in the offering one raises itself up in my general direction with its mouth open.
great little beasts but harmless.

Hey deb_b, thanx for the link....great pics  I think its always a good idea to see just what an animal is capable of, even if it only happens on rare occassions!!  I agree that I wouldn't fancy a bite from one! Hoggies are great snakes and as long as you are a competent keeper, you shouldn't have any probs with them.

Yeah, I had seen that exact link, Deb. Before I went and got one, lol.
I believe in stepping outside my own comfort zone now and then, but
because I know what they can do I wear a glove. (brave, huh? )
I must say, in the beginning she never hissed at all. Only after she hadn't been handled for a good while. Hopefully she will outgrow this behavior. |

| yeah iv seen that link before, this is how i understand it. The guy in that link let the hognose chew on him for 5 Min's (very stupid) hognose snakes have rear fangs and a very poor delivery system meaning they have to 'chew' there prey in order to get its rear fangs in place. Hognose venom is very mild and will cause varying reactions from absolutely nothing to local swelling you should be more afraid of being stung by a wasp as that can KILL you if your allergic. These snakes arnt inclined to bite you because they know they cant eat you but if you do get bitten just remove it....simple. i wouldn't bother with the gloves as some snakes don't like the feel and there really is nothing to be afraid of. |

Hognoses dont want to bite you, if you get bit it is because you smell like food and you deserve it[u]
Hognoses are not at all dangerous, if they where, you would need a license.
Basically they are greedy pigs that may on occasion mistake you for food because of the smell of food, or miss the prey and get you, but it will notcause any problems unless you let it chew for a few minutes, even then it probably will not have any effect. it is possible they only have some mild venom when they are eating certain animals frogs toads etc.
they are harmless lovely little snakes.

Basically, you are right, (though hissing isn't exactly a lovely trait in a snake.)
But they do have some nasty eating habits. You guys at the other side of the pond don't know this because you are lucky to have hoggies that only know thawed food, but when they eat live, as mine unfortunately does -- let me tell you, it is not a pretty sight.
As you know they don't constrict, and the rear fangsif they contain a slight venom don't cause any real harm, so basically they eat their prey alive. It's not their fault, they have no choice about it, but that doesn't change the fact that I am really getting turned off by this.
Last week she seemed still hungry after one pinkie but that was all I had. Today I was prepared and offered two. She ate both of them without taking a breath in between, but for some reason she decided to eat them starting from the rear! So she worked her way up the pinkie's body until it's snout disappeared, while the pinkie was still fully alive. And immediately she proceeded to eat the second one in the same way...
I am now wondering if she is ever going to be retrained. Yesterday I offered a thawed pinkie after rubbing some of our hamster's substrate on it so it had a little smell on it, but she showed no interest whatsoever. As soon as she realizes the thing is dead she moves away and never even looks at it anymore.
All this is of course going to become more and more graphic. The older she gets, the bigger the prey that gets eaten alive.... It's enough to turn your stomach! Constricting is so much easier...
Anybody has any ideas what I should do? |

 Sorry to hijack post but tought it would continue feeding theme. Managed to get pics of new hoggies whilst male was starting his dinner (funny to hear him hissing with a mouth full of pinkie!)
