i was just wondering, i know there isnt a definative answer but how would most people provide a heat gradient for a western hognose, i would have a heat mat with temp thermostat heating 1/3 of viv.

most people suggest lighting and a heat mat does however wouldnt that make it difficult to regulate the temps with one thermostat. i was thinking maybe using a low wattage sun glo bulb about 25 or 40 watt during the day

please could you post your opinions

hi for my hognose I simply use a dimmer stat on a 40watt light bulb.
They seem to get along fine.
They have bred so I must be doing something right lol.

Personally i use both especially with my snakes, the reason i do this is because once a snake has fed it will go and lay directly on the site where the mat is located. When the mats wernt in there i found they went off and hid for a few days whilst digesting the meal.

I feel the underbelly heat helps to digest the prey item and the heat over head provides a natural period of daylight and dark and provides a basking spot where as a heat mat doesn't (in my opinion)

it does seem more natural to use light and a heat mat for the reasons u have given, i was just wondering if u are getting heat from a light or ceramic bulb and a heat mat isn't there a chance the Viv will overheat how do u regulate the temperatures of both sources at the same time

i was thinking using a very low wattage bulbs, even 40 watt bulbs give off quite a bit of heat, i dunno??
