|
|
After asking him, I used tony nicoli's arboreal viv design and asked a local plastics company if they could make one for me.
I prefer them to herpteks, etc, because of the drawer concept (and I thought it would be cheaper), but looking at the reply, herpteks don't seem so bad for their price.
After I sent plans for a 2ft cube, this is the response that followed
Quote: | further to your recent enquiry, we have pleasure in submitting our quotation
as below.
The price for 1 no. snake unit, manufactured from 6mm clear acrylic to your
specification, complete with drawer with hinges, the cost would be £525.00 +
VAT. Lead time currently 10-14 working days. Payment terms on proforma
invoice.
If you ordered quantities of 5 or more, we can reduce the cost per item by
10%. |
Think I might have a go at constructing my own after that, slight over-pricing |

well overpriced. I am wondering weather its because they would be using 6mm clear acrylic. That is very costly. Still, well over the top for a 2ft cube. _________________ 3.7.3 Stuff! |

I have researched arboreal viv construction techniques for some years now.
I have constructed acrylic ones myself.
The best acrylic is extruded,as cast acrylic has to many impurities.
You can get a complete 2ft cube out of one sheet. This cost is around £120.00 including cuts. The glue is nearly as expensive as the acrylic,it is a 2 part glue call TENSOL 70.
The problem with acrylic and the drawer type system,is that if you do not use RO water, then the deposits become a problem after only 2 months use. If you need a supplier then NKP in kent are reasonable.
6mm acrylic will warp also, and if you go to 8mm then the price goes through the roof.
Hope this helps |

Whats wrong with aquarium silicon? Only a couple of quid per tube. _________________ Andrew Tillson-Willis

Silicone will stick it,bot not bond it.
Tensol actually melts/bonds it together. |

These are the vivs i manufacture.
There is a 2ft cube and a 4x2x2.
They were designed for arboreal snakes, but they are used by many lizard keepers now.
They can withstand temperatures of 65c,are made from abs, which is a food grade plastic.
The only metal parts are the stainless steel screws that attach the hing to the door and carcass.
All parts are now available as spares.
The 2ft cube is £149.00
and the 4x2x2 is £245.00 |

So whats wrong with that? It's good enough for glass vivariums. _________________ Andrew Tillson-Willis

Silicone will adhere fully to glass, thats what it is desined for.
Put silicone onto acrylic, then expose the acrylic to hot humid conditions and you will be able to pull the sheets of acrylic apart.
If you use a cleaner that you would use on glass prior to applying the silicone,on acrylic, then the acrylic will stain.
I you require technical imformation on the correct ways to bond acrylic, then the suppliers are your best source. |

I was told that acrylic based materials (paint, glue, perspec ext) were harmful to herps...well animals because of them being a lead based material????

lol....cheaper isn't always better. Glass is too heavy and breaks easy....I should know, I just moved 3 2ft cubed glass tanks today and nearly sliced the top of my thumb off! That's every week for the last 3 weeks that I have badly cut a finger or thumb on glass _________________
