I bought a tub from LF for my cham, but only about 3 flies hatched out.
My cham wasn't really fussed on them either! _________________

My young chams love them but the hatch rate can be sporadic and you need to keep them just right else they wont hatch. A very slightly dampened piece of tissue paper and some sugar in their tub and keep them at about 80f. The flies that is not the chams _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

I feed my curly wings a mix of honey and powdered milk, made into a thick paste they lash it down, and have lovely white tummys so you know they have a belly full of goodness _________________

Apparently they are easy to breed on a mix of dogfood and powdered milk. I should have some recipes somewhere. If I manage to find them I'll translate (they're in Dutch) and post them. So, you don't need meat and they should not be too difficult to cultivate. |

FOund something in English here http://www.jangala.co.uk/Curly%20winged%20fly%20culture%20webpage.htm
Basically you can culture the larvae on a mixture of (meat-based!) dog or cat food. You need to soak the dog food and mix it about 1:1 with bran until you get a mix that is not too wet or too dry (yes, quite vague ). You can add powdered milk to it and something to make sure it doesn't mould over, like nipagine.
Adult flies can be fed a dry mix of dextrose + powdered milk, but you have to give them water so they can drink.
Make sure the adult flies have somewhere to sit on aside form the medium. It may be an idea to have a pot with the substrate in a larger pot with woodshavings so the flies have more room and the larvae can get out to pupate in the shavings.
There are lots of variations you can try. It is important to make sure the culture is not too wet (mites). Keep them at around 25-30C. There should be very little odour.
Hope this helps. |
