Very observant Steve
I have probably less than 8 tailless cresteds in total, at least 5 of those I bought as tailless adults, that's out of a total of approx 200 cresteds.
It's also interesting to remember that I keep them in groups of up to 10 adults including multiple males & also often rear youngsters in groups of 50's.
Gargoyles on the other hand , those are complete tail biters/eaters I have very few adults that have not lost their tails at some stage, just glad the gargoyles grow them back _________________

Nice cresteds Scott
You guys talking about adults with out tales reminded me of a visit to a "specialist" reptile shop a few weeks ago... the guy had a couple in there wanting to start with cresteds... asking about morphs ect and seeing some of his geckos, they asked "why do some have tails and others don't?" the guy replied thats also a moprh that we are producing _________________ Paul

That's very impressive, a lot of Cresteds I see from other people and on different forums etc almost always have a good few tailless in their collections, and they don't have anywhere near 200 individuals lol. There seem to be a lot of views as to why cresteds lose their tails, some even think they get rid of them on purpose as they become more of a hinderance than a help
I can understand why almost all of the cresteds found on New Caledonia were tailless due to predators and the likes, but in captivity it must be something to do with housing? Looking at the way you set up your cresteds with lots of egg crates; lack of hiding places/visual barriers probably has something to do with it. _________________ Steve P |

the whole tail loss thing is certainly interesting. I can't think of any other species that can shed it's tail as easy but CAN'T grow it back (there must be others but I'm stumped right now )
The tail definately helps them move, climb, jump and grip and even has a slightly flat end that can attach to surfaces like their feet.
Without seeing the dropped tail it's hard to say what causes it to happen. The only two I know for sure that happened in my collection were both dropped during handling. I've not seen any real aggressive tail biting or actively trying to hunt another one's tail. They do occasional jump for a cricket and end up with a tail in their mouths but they always let it go before the other animal drops it. _________________

Nice females there!, you should have some crackers this year!
Are any of the stunning young cresteds started to hatch yet?

Just wondered, do they lay their eggs like that? Or have you found them and put them on the surface just to take a photo? As I'm hoping to breed mine but not sure if I will need to dig around to look for the eggs. _________________ 1.1.1 Crested Geckos

Very nice Scott.
Do you remove the eggs for incubation or leave in situ?
How's the Gargoyle breeding coming along? _________________ “If in doubt, just say nowt” |

Thanks, there should be youngsters hatching in the next few weeks, these are from last years season (I always get a few eggs year round).

They generally bury them but it all depends on the substrate, if it's too wet they lay them on the surface, if it's a bit dry they will lay in the only damp patch.

I remove all the eggs when I find them, normally I check the nest boxes once a week, perhaps twice.
Gargoyles are doing well thanks, had a few clutches so far this year & a few left to hatch from last year still _________________
