Most snakes are best kept alone and only brought together for the dirty dead arn't they?

They look so much like grumpy old men!!!! Quite fascinating. Rougher skin than corns too. Very Happy

mine thinks hes well ard when he's in his tub, hissing and telling me to p-off but as soon as you pick him up hes calm as you like. Full of character lovely little snakes

That sounds just like mine!! It's unbelievable how spunky they are! Mine is maybe 10 inches or so, and she really stands her ground, flattening her head, hissing, her whole body seems to swell up. But Julie, and everybody else here -- you all seem to be so much braver than I! I admit that this behavior freaks me out a little, especially since I know that their fangs are somewhat venomous.

I can't imagine this is all for show.. None of you have ever been bitten by your hognose? Come on, spill the beans, it's ok to admit it.... I want to know what I'm in for. What are my chances that I'll get bitten if I stick my hand in there.... Rolling Eyes

Btw, she used to be very docile. Could she have become like this bec. I didn't take her out on a regular basis?
She freaked me out so much last night that I left the pinkie in her tank overnight. Right now she is back on live ones which she was used to when I bought her (she has only accepted thawed twice, and then she refused for a whole month until I finally broke down.)

She was so aggravated by my trying to put her into her feeding container (like a small deli cup) that she wasn't in the mood to eat anymore, or whatever it was. (She and the pinkie touched noses, and then she turned away.) I tried to pick her up with bamboo feeding tongues, but it didn't work. And I must admit, I was to tickled by her behavior (besides being "scared") that I prodded her a little bit with the tongues just for fun to see her whip around and hiss again. I have never seen her that mad, lol! (I'm sooo bad.... Wink )

In the morning she ate it first thing when she came out of the ground. I just saw her with her neck all stuffed.

Ok, so for a week everything is dandy... Pooff. But what next? She is becoming a little wild thing.

You guys have any suggestions for me?? Please???

There are snake species that don't bother biting even though they have the potential to open your hand up like a can opener. Your little beauty, even if it was to bite, would be very unlikely to cause you any damage at all. Wear a gardening glove if you are really unsure of your snake, but the sudden head movements are pure bluff, that's what these guys do, its just for show, the "strikes" are mouth closed and just designed to give the snake a chance to run away. The more you handle her the less likely she is to react in this way, it can become a vicious circle otherwise.
Part of the enjoyment of reptiles is that they make no promises. You have to love something that thinks it can scare a potential threat that's 1000 times bigger than it. Cool

Yes, that's true! She could easily bury in the ground where she lives anyway 80% of the time. But instead she bluffs... It's downright admirable. I'd bet in the wild this works well for them. Determination goes a long way.

Believe you're confident and others will too Wink

I love hognoses - I've been looking into importing a pair into Jersey so I can rear them up and hopefully breed them. They have great little characters, and I love the feel of them too - as someone else said, very different scales, they're not flat.

Plus, as someone mentioned before (and I know Al said about the bites), they're rear fanged, so even though they have a little bit of venom, the chances are, even if they did actually bite rather than bluff, y'aint gonna get a fang strike!

Really looking forward to getting my pair Smile

Jon

Have a look at this website with pics of a bite from a hognose!

http://herpnet.net/bite/

I don't think I would like one of those, even tho this bite was feeding related! Shocked
