hi i use an RO system but you must take into account that for every litre of water they produce they waste about 3 litres so if your on a water metre thay can be quite costly to run
also they need to be under quite high pressure to work and the pre filters will need replacing about every 8-12 months
mine is connected to the out side tap by a small hose that then runns through the wall of the house to the unit that is located under the sink (keeping the unit inside prevents it from freezing in bad weather and breaking) then two other hoses run back out side one produces the product water which is then collected in a 5 gallon container and the waste water fron the other hose goes down the drain.
once i have collected a container full which takes about 24 hr i just turn the tap off
as for using it for drinking water as well as removing all the harnful chemicals it also remover the good minerals so as long as you replace them with a supplement then theres no problem
also if you have a good aquatics centre near you that does marine or discus fish chances are they produce the stuff and should be able to sell you some
hope this helps |

What about collecting and using rainwater?, its a much greener option.
I am planning a bigger room for my lizards but have two problems, one is its going to be a long way from the house to run mains water and second is there are no drains to run the guttering into so im intending to have the guttering run into an internal collection tank with a pre filter and have that connected to a sink tap. I would imagine this water to be healthier for them. _________________ www.Reptilebreeder.co.uk

Another good plan. I just want to keep it simple else it will get all overly technical for my brain
As regards the RO system it will take out the crap from the water but the amounts of extras in the water are probably not harmful to chams and the added calcium is probably good for them. But I supplement with calcium anyway.
I re-routed my mains supply it was not hard to do and did that myself just bought some correct grade blue mains polly pipe found the external stop cock and re-routed the whole lot, so it should not be too much of an issue to extend your water supply. Else fit an outside tap kit connected to your indoor mains water supply and run some pipe from that? Could even put a domestic RO system in place before the water hits the external tap supply? Do your whole water supply then.
I have found a manufacturer of Nozzles that can be bought direct, way cheaper than via retailers. My friend put me onto this.
Like most things that at first appear simple when you begin researching there are so many variables to take into account such as flow rate, litres per hour, blah blah blah. It can get quite complex
My latest plan it to rig up a slow dripper system with a torbec valve into a 84ltr really useful box that is mains fed. This is a cheap and simple way to achieve a slow drip for the chams.
For misting it looks like I am going for a pumped system, using a water butt aquarium heater to ensure water is warm enough, a two way manifold from the water tap one for drip one for misting. A digital timer and away I go. The RO unit I am still contemplating. That would need an inlet an out let and a drain outlet.
For viv drainage the vivs already have acrylic liners, sloped floors to hole in viv base, insert pipe run off into pipework and out via wall into a soakaway. So I think I am almost there with the set up. Am just awaiting some info on surflow pumps at the moment. The rest is just nozzles, tube, valves and filters _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Well what about leaving a bucket out in the rain.
If you want to try an RO i have an old one in the shed not being used, you can have that. I'll even bring it to Hamm for you to collect.
I'll leave it behind the bar _________________ www.Reptilebreeder.co.uk

hehehehehhehehe yes bucket out in the rain, tell you what probably more crap in the rain than the tap water! I kid you not.
Perhaps I can attach your old RO unit to myself in the bar and see if I can convert the German wheat beer _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk
