I recently saw a western hognose in our local shop and it is gorge!!!!!!
I googled it and the info seems to be that they are very placid and rarely ever bite..... Is this true? and are they as easy to care for as corns?
Thanks guys.

They are great snakes - have the most character IMO - plus they're small (24" for an adult female, 18" for a male). I don't keep them, but have dealt with them few times. Very curious snakes, I know of one which will be up at the glass as soon as you begin to unlock the viv.

With regards to placidity, basically, they will hood up, hiss, and bluff strike if you annoy them, but the worst you are likely to get is a head butt! (still makes ya jump though) Once out the viv, most are extremely placid.

Again, fantastic snakes - mixed views on substrate though - any keepers shed some light?

Great snakes i keep mine (Brenda) on aspen nice and deep, she loves to tunnel and has routes all over the viv. She thinks she is a cobra but is as placid as anything when in your hands.

I kept my hognose quite happily on aspen. Good for burrowing. I know some people keep them on sand but I wouldn't recommend that personally. They are fantastic little snakes and lots of fun. Very Happy
