I agree with Dave et al also,

The viv is only a temporary measure for the big animal for a week or so until I move him into the 'beastie room'. there's not a lot of point filling it full of wood and things for the time being. He's literally just settling, the photos were taken only 15 minutes after I bought him home.

With the animals in the top pictures you can see that I usually have wood and cork bark etc in the Viv - the small water bowl was put in when I put the female in with the smaller male - I took most of the decoration out as the male has a track record of aggression to females and I wanted to be sure that I could separate them fairly quickly and also that if the female took flight that she would not hurt herself on tank decor.

Martin - Not wanting to be picky - and the above comments still stand - But how do you determine 'happiness' in monitor lizards? That's a very anthropomorphic comment - I would suggest that animals that continue to grow, feed and show reproductive interest (or actually reproduce), are alert, active and responsive are 'happy'.

Carl

at the end of the day, whats so exciting about a piece of wood anyway Cool my bosc doesnt seem too excited by his wood, though he goes crazy when his earthworms are chucked into his soil lol. Food makes monitors happy, food and whipping their glass.

Clearly the wood you are using isn't suitable for climbing or anything so of course your monitor has no interest in it. My monitors have plenty of climbing trees, rocks etc and use them all, day in and day out.

If you were given a choice between a cell that had nothing but four walls and a sink or a cell that had a climbing gym and exercise equipment, which would you prefer?

(sorry, but not surprised your monitor whips the glass. That says a lot).

(in my previous question, both cells would have the sink, of course)
