Hey guys, someone bought me a new book the other day, Savannah Monitors by Mark K Bayless.
Anyway, its got a really good section on breeding and he says females have a bigger head/body ratio to tail whereas males are 50/50.
I currently have a 1 1/2 yr old and a baby. If these characteristics are correct, i have a definite female measuring 28inch and a male around 9inch.
Does anyone agree with these characteristics? and how has everyone else sexed their monitors? |

Well, for starters you can't sex babies accurately. Some claim to be able to, but I've yet to see any evidence of anyone doing it successfully/consistently.
Even if body/tail ratios were a reliable way of sexing adults (I have my doubts) all rules would have to be thrown out of the window for hatchlings - which have very different proportions.
The best way to sex an adult exanthematicus is to post photos of:
Side view of the head
Side view of the base of the tail
and have people on here guess. Males tend to have a longer, higher, 'boxier' snout, with raised areas above the nostrils. Females have a more tapered, pointier snout.
Males also have a very heavy tail base, usually with visible hemipenal bulges. |

My 28inch bosc has never everted hemipenes, has a pointy snout, and fits the so called ratio of the authors work. Ofcourse I have doubtd about the baby, its always better to sex at an older age with any species.
I have posted a picture of Don in my other thread. The tail area may not be visible on my pictures though |

Neither has my male lace monitor, but that hasn't stopped him from fathering dozens of offspring.

Neither of those shots you posted are at the right sort of angle to sex a monitor as both shots are almost front on face shots. Post side view photos of its head and tail base and the people on this forum will be able to give you a better guess, several times more accurate than body/tail proportions (which has never been proven as a technique) or failure to evert hemipenes. I'm not saying that yours isn't a female, because there's a 50% chance it is, but with the techniques you are currently using that's exactly what you are relying on: just chance. |

well don has always been referred to as a boy to me anyway, his sex isnt all that important to me and when goliath was big enough i was gonna go to the vets and get them sexed. What procedure would a vet most likely use when sexing boscs?
Will try get some pictures of don that are up to date, and i'll have a look through my older pics to see if any would be suitable! |

ok well this is not a recent pic, he wouldve been around 7-8months old here but hopefully you will see what u want to see from the pic...
didnt know how to change the size so my apologies if its very large.
my signature shows both boscs heads with a side on view, although goliath is a baby, you can see clearly there is a head size/shape difference. |

Yeah, that's because it's a baby.
The larger one looks like a young male to me. It's hard to see the head profile in that shot because of the woodchips (not a very good substrate, by the way. You should switch over to dirt that it can dig in).
Dean, your shot is a bit too far away (and can't see the head), but if I had to guess based on the tail base, I'd say female. |
