Hi to everyone on this forum Very Happy ,

I'm a new member here, would be very pleased if someone can give me some advise about using really useful boxes 50 liter in a rack system. I'm thinking of using with lids on, I know it's not the best idea but I have a young lad (16 months old) and I'm worried that he might just pull the box out a bit and have a snake escape Sad .

What I want to know is if I do with the lid on how much ventilation I would need, how many holes and what size? Plus the rack will be in a room where the temperature goes up and down a bit, any idea what would be the best size of heat mat to use 6 inches wide or I've seen some 11 to 12 inches wide the really useful box is about 27 inches long so it would still only be half the floor space, any advice on this please?

Would be very grateful with any help on all of this, thanks in advance.

Gary & Nana

hi
I use 50ltr really useful boxes lids on.
I use a 17 x 11 inch heat mats on a thermostat( practically only about 9 inches into the box is heated and you very securely tape the thermostat probe to the bit the box is not covering. you could use a 6 inch but in cold weather it could struggle to get temp up.
Lids on is good with kids.
I ventilate mine using a soldering iron. Basically about 20 holes in a squarish fasion each side of the corner ribs which is about 160 holes in total.
hope helps
mike

I'm guessing you have your heat mats across the tub and not long ways?? (If you get what I mean)
Do you find the 17x11 heat the 50l boxes O.K?? I have a 11x11 lying around which I put under a 50l tub and found that it doesn’t really heat the box up that well.. Mad
So will get the 17x11 if you recommend them for the 50l really useful tubs.

Thanks

Just a thought.
I personaly dont measure the ambient temps.
I measure the newspaper temp on the heatmat outside the hide.
When I am not cycling for breeding I keep it between 85/89. if it is 86 I know in the hide it will be nice and warm, about 90. if it gets up to about 89/90(ouside hide) i turn thermostat down a little because will be a getting a bit too warm in hide.
Basically I only worry about the surface temp of the warm side.
hope helps.
Other people worry more about ambient temps which is fine but i personally dont.
