Glad to see I'm not the only one who feeds by hand. One of my Royals refuses point blank to feed off the tongs. Offer him the food on the tongs and he gives me the foulest look and just sits there. Put the tongs down and offer him the rat with me holding the tail and it's "Rat Gone". Everyone else takes their food off the tongs but not Byron. I have no explanation for it but daft as this sounds it's almost as if it's his way of saying "Don't you trust me?" I've had Byron since he was a tiny hatchling and have always handled him regularly. I've tried so many times using the tongs as I know as he gets bigger, if he does miss and get my hand, his jaws are getting stronger but no dice. He just will not take food off the tongs.

Weird!

He's probably more interested in the food when you hold it because of your body heat...but I certainly wouldn't recommend it.. Cool

I thought that too but I make sure the rat is warmer than my hands (I don't think I'd taste nice to the snake). I tend to have cold hands anyway so it's not a heat thing. I've even tried popping the warmed rat in his viv and just leaving him to it. That doesn't work either. I guess I'll never know unless some kind of miracle happens and he actually tells me his reasons LOL.

I can pretty much guarantee its a heat thing...you may not think your hands are that hot but get an infa red thermometer gun and measure your hand temp and the temp of the rat... Wink

It's feeding night tonight so I'll try that out of interest. I'm not worried anyway so long as he eats Very Happy
