Well, finally I have got around to going through some photos and uploading them that I have taken with my new lens that I got for xmas.
I also got a new tripod myself, and a couple of desk lamps to help with lighting things decently, but havn't managed to get any ES fitting full spectrum bulbs, which has irritated me as you can see - the light in the photos is irritating and hard to get right even with photoshop.
Major thanks to all the guys who gave me advice and pointed me in the right direction. I am not overly pleased with the images I have got out so far, but that is definately down to me being out of practice and needing more, rather than the equipment I have got, which I cannot praise highly enough.
Anyway, here are some of the shots, taken with: Nikon D70s, Sigma 150mm lens (and most of them taken on the new tripod (I did go for a Manfrotto after all Stu, its awesome, definately worth the money!))
Paraguayan rainbow boa, Gonzo (its his 1st birthday today haha!)
Jampea retic, Zappa (please excuse the marks on his head, he has rubbed a couple of scales off... its improving with tamodine, and doesn't seem to have affected him too much - I'm keeping a close eye on things anyway)

Glad your having fun mate..good choice on the tripod too...Trust me that 150mm gets heavy after a while!!.. 
Nice pics,any reason for using the spot metering?..I would keep it on matrix when your this close..Depth of field is good and I would use the onboard flash to fill in..

good first few pics, all takes time to get to know your camera etc
must admit this year I WILL learn to use my camera properly...give Stuart a run for his money then

I just stuck to f22 for most of the pics, which makes for long exposures but it was ok with the tripod and the snakes were both (unusually) well behaved so most of the pics wern't blurred.
Reason for spot metering is a simple one... I am too lazy to have changed it, and need to learn more about exactly how changing the metering will affect the exposure in this setting. I was using it before for when I was doing more portrait - like stuff... peoples faces etc. I'll try it on matrix, and try to read up some more stuff on it. Cheers for the tip.

And yeah, it will take a while for me to get to know the lens properly... but practice makes slightly better each time. Screw perfection
