Shay,

I wouldn't go to the bank on that being a male just yet -- the size of the organs is borderline, although having a double eversion just for the grins of it isn't a female thing. 60/40 you're correct, but keep an open mind.

thanks Sam, by the way do you have any photos of a known female that has everted. i'd like to see the similarities between a female and a juvie male.
to tell you the truth, i really hope it turns out to be a female.
cheers

Shay,
Sorry I don't, since I don't keep panoptes. I'm basing this on wild-caught animals of initially unknown sex, which were radiotracked and later seen mating and nesting. We had called several of those wrongly (as males) at first owing to the size of their productions. Generally the hemiclitores of females either are not everted as fully or have considerably less ornamentation towards the end, compared to hemipenes. What I'm saying is that they usually (in my experience) appear tubular, vs. expanded at the tip.

Here is a photograph of the hemipene of a male Varanus beccarii. You can clearly see the flower-like appendage at the end of the structure. While the morphology and size of this structure varies between species (and has been used as a diagnostic character for determining phylogenetic relatedness), there are consistencies between Varanus, and I would not rule out something as being a male or female without seeing such a flower-like structure.

thanks for the picture Bob.
back when i kept albigs i recall seeing my male evert. it didn't look anything like your baccarii's but it had the flowery tip. for some reason i've never seen my adult male argus evert, so i don't really know for sure what its structure looks like.
cheers
