Thankyou They are lovely snakes and all of them have got lovely temperaments too.
My Kingsnake's a real sweetie (you can tell that by the pic). She picked me, not the other way round. We got her from a reptile shop that's now closed. Everytime we went in there, she always came up to the front of the viv. She has an endearing way of looking at you and putting her head to one side, a bit like a dog does. Anyway, we were up at the shop one day and a young lad of about 8 was jumping up and down saying he was going to get "that snake" for Christmas. His two younger sisters then started arguing about who was going to get the snake! Meanwhile Sammy had gone to the back of the viv and I swear if ever a snake looked worried, she did. I had this mental picture of the kids having a tug-of-war with the snake and the snake ending up dead on the floor I had a word with the mother and she didn't know anything about snakes at all but seemed to be thinking about buying the snake nearer Christmas. As soon as they left Sammy came to the front of the viv and put her head to one side as if to say "Please buy me!!!" So I did
One thing that always intrigued me (and still does), if she's in her hide or under the substrate, if I call her name in a quiet low voice, she comes out. Whether this is true or not I don't know, but I read somewhere that Kingsnakes are one of the few snakes that aren't deaf and can hear low level noise. If I speak to her she flicks her tongue back at me. Many people who have come to my house have seen this and are fascinated by it and non more so than me. She does this even if the viv doors are closed. If I open the viv door and hold my hand out to her she'll slither onto my hand. Of all my snakes, she has the most character, followed by Byron my Royal Python, Jake the Cornsnake and Kai my son's Anery Cornsnake.
Here's Byron my Python (I've had him since he was a hatchling). He's quite a character too and not a bit shy for a Royal.
and Bobby our Rescue Royal. Bobby tends to be a bit shy when being handled but relaxes very quickly. He used to shy away, which isn't suprising as he was horribly neglected by his previous owners but gradually he's becoming more confident. Tender Loving Care works wonders.
When we got him he was like a Toblerone bar. He's a big boy now That pic is nearly a year old but it's a really good one. He's a lot bigger than that now.
Hope you like them _________________ 3 Royal Pythons - Byron, Bobby & Rosie

I agree totally babes, one of our Royals reponds to being called tho with her it must be vibration rather than actually hearing it, if I call her she comes out to the front of the viv and out. I can leave the door open and she only does it when called so I do really think they learn to recognise sounds in whatever fashion. (I remember reading something about snakes recognising prey signatures by vibration somewhere) Sadly our two were a bit tobleroney when they came to us, isn't it lovely to get them back to where they should be and see them blossom in healthy snakes again. I do think they know whose good for them too, my Rat snakes are very laid back and calm with me but have a real thing about my eldest son, one of them has bitten him twice and yet hasn't even flinched at anyone else.
Your babies are just beautiful, we only started keeping this year and I could kick myself for missing out on these amazing creatures for some long, sadly I was one of the nasty bitey baddies brigade until I actually got to know one for real. I can't say (and don't need to) how much joy, pleasure and satisfaction I get from these fascinating animals who now allow me to share their lives. I sound all arty farty there and I'm not just constantly finding yet another reason to fall in love with them all over again. Thank you so much for the extra pics, I can honestly never get enough of them they are all so different and I have an especially soft spot for Royals, they have such sweet natures and are so unassuming I really think they get underated. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |
