Guinness our wee salvator loves a bath. He is coming on well, and eating like a pig.
He was very timid for a long time, but is now getting a bit braver.  He has a bit of shed hanging off his tail in these pics, in case anyone was wondering what it was! |

He is getting a bit less flighty. I took advice from a monitor forum in the States, which suggested removing all cage furniture, deep substrate etc, and leaving only essentials like water bowl, feeding bowl and basking branch.
He still has substrate, but he can only just burrow into it. I've noticed he spends much more time out basking and hunting crickets now, which to me is a good sign.  |

That to me just sounds like you are going to break his spirit. Let your monitor be a monitor. He hides a lot and is flighty because he is scared of you. Give him time and he will come around. He should be allowed to learn on his own to trust you, not to be forced to be out in the open all the time.
All of my monitors are given the most natural environment i can provide (that’s half the fun of monitors for me!) and they have all adjusted really well. My Albigs even band on the glass when i walk in the room because they know i bring them food! lol! |

Hi all.
lol93, i have thought about going down that path myself with my juvenile Argus. ever since moving it into much larger enclosure, with deep sand/soil substrate, i hardly ever see it & when i do it quickly shoots down one of it's many burrows. but i also agree with Rick's opinion that this is natural monitor behaviour & as i originally got it for that reason, i am reluctant to try & force it to behave in a way that is unatural.although it is very frustrating i know. also have to think about stressing the animal, maybe to the point of not eating. good luck with your monitor. |
