Hi all , a few pics of some of my non reptile animals
Here is a pic of my male apricot African pygmy hedgehog
and some of my Ten Ricks , OK tenrecs
male
and female
and their heads together to show the slight difference in the head shape ,male on the right, the few males I have seen have a shorter stubbier nose and a pink ring around the eyes,This I assume has to do with the secretion of a milky substance when around other males.
They are now cooling so hopefully some youngsters soon !!!
also a pic of my male long eared , they are a little bigger than APH's and their behavior is quite different , they have huge feet that are used in digging in their arid environment in the wild, these too are have a cooling period to induce pairing.
and lastly a pic of a young African pygmy dormouse.I have done well with these and have a few youngsters at present though they do take an age to wean compared to pet mice.
Dont worry Rick , you are top of my list for the next youngsters !!

Wicked Steve. Nice very nice. Love the Ten Ricks
Steve please go into explicit detail about sexing the tenrecs. I am new to the ternrecs and need to suss it all out! Where do you live? Forward aren't I?
What is the earliest age that they can be sexed? The more detail the better please.
I await your babies with glee! _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Hi Rick
sexing them is quite difficult as there are no obvious differences in genitalia externally.
The males I have seen show a hairless ring around their eyes , this I assume is due to the glands that produce a milk like liquid at times of stress and when near other males.Wether the glands are under the skin here , or the secrtion is from the eye itself , or tear duct , I am not sure.
The following pics show the heads and hope fully you can discern the pink ring around the males eye.
Also the males I have seen , though only a few , do seem to have a squatter head.
If you could email me some pics of the heads of yours I'll give it a shot at checking their sexes

Females head - longer and tapered
