Cork should be fine - but pour some boiling water over it for peace of mind, same with any other twigs/logs. Try to get apple tree branches, and leave any bark on for grip.

BE WARNED: you may think he has disappeared on one of the first mornings, when he has just slipped und the paper towel. Really gets you the first time
