yep they use it during shedding mostly at night as well

I've had a soil box in with mine for a year now (mix of soil and sand). And he uses it approx 50% of the time.

it is worth keeping a burrow box/humid box in there all of the time.
it provides a hide and a sloughing box.
so i keep 1 in the hot end and one in the cold end!
