I read about these in an Ackie post below but rather than "hi-jack" it i thought i would start a new post.

Does anyone have any information on these?

Hi Rick,

In the UK we tend to use ordinary incandescent light bulbs, often in the reflector style which gives a 'beam of light', together with fluorescent tubes.

There are however much more powerful lighting products available, which are more widely used on the continent. Often, these produce intensities and wavelengths more akin to natural sublight.

HQL lights use mercury vapour bulbs. You need a ceramic lampholder and in the UK, you often also need a transformer to notch the voltage down to 110V (from 240V), depending on the make/model.

HQI are metal halide lights. These come in sealed glazed units and are the lights used by reefkeepers for growing corals and so on. These are the ultimate, but come at a price.

The thinking is that whilst most UK/US keepers pay attention to temperatures, they do not consider the intrinsic benefits of intense light...

The UV Powersun type lights have improved things a lot; these fall into the HQL category.

In the UK there are a number of mail order places that supply fishkeeping equipment; these are one of the easiest places to buy HQI lights here.

You must have similar companies...

sorry,

now to hqi it´s the best for small monitors and should be the minimum for the larger ones . i use it for my panoptes and will use it for the jobiensis i´ll get.
