Hi All,

Looking for a bit of advice on a sad note.

Had a baby crested hatch in the container I was keeping the eggs in.

As I was getting the new baby out another egg started leaking some liquid so I thought this too was going to hatch.
As I was watching the egg moved about so the baby was alive, but then movement stopped and the egg did not split open, just the small hole that the liquid was seeping through.

I decided after a while of no movement, to ease the egg open and the baby was dead.

Can babies die if they do not get out of the egg in time by drowning, as the baby was alive at first from the movement I saw in the egg??

Thanks.

hi there
it does happen occasionally, its happened to me once. Maybe its such a struggle to get out of the egg that some just don't make it, quite sad when they've made it full term too. Sorry for your loss, best of luck with future hatchlings.

Hi, as Angi say's it does happen. I have lost quite a few during the year for the same reason, fully formed but unable to hatch.

For me it seems to happen to a batch (4 or 5 eggs from different females laid at the same time) and then they all hatch fine again. I haven't quite got to the bottom of why yet but I'm sure I'll crack it soon.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Its a really sad thing to see, just keep kicking myself for not trying to open the egg sooner as the little fella was alive and trying to get out.
But thought when I saw movement he would fight his way out and didn't wanna hurt him trying to help.

Seems cruel when things like this happen to carry on letting my male and 2 females breed, wondering if I should keep them in different viv's.

It's a part of nature as sad as it may seem, and this is exactly what they would face in their natural habitat too - if you personally can't go through it again it's completely up to you about whether you want to consider breeding again - but I recommend you be strong, and just think of the lives you've created that are beautiful and perfectly healthy!!

Very well put Kate. The process of hatching is an incredibly tiring and strenuous one. Some individuals are simply not strong enough for whatever reason. The fact that you, (rogerbird) have successfully hatched some healthy hatchlings in itself makes the whole process worthwhile. Well done. I wouldn`t give up, allowing your animals to breed is far closer to nature than if you didn`t.

I would have given up keeping reptiles long ago if every failure that I have had made me stop trying. Like I said, congratulations on the healthy ones. It`s an achievement to be proud of. Wink

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

It is a great thing to have & see hatchlings right in front of your eyes!! and your spot on regarding this being closer to nature than not letting them breed at all. Plus I know my girls get grumpy and quiet when I take my male out to give them a rest every few weeks etc!! So they would not be happy at that thought!

Just at 1st it is so off putting when these things happen, But nature as you say does its own thing.

The other little fella that hatched and was healthy was my 5th one so far and the previous 4 were very healthy and fine. So it was just one of those things you can do nothing to prevent.

I may keep him/her actually as it has such a fiery personality, will not stop trying to bite me and making noises! Stocky build and nice harlequin patterned.

Will try to post a picture later.

Thanks.
