not entirely, assist feeder could be as such you hold the head of the snake and gently open the mouth of the snake and place rat head in the mouth and the snake does the rest, force feeding is different you are forcefully pushing the food item down

Although Karl is spot on with his description, I still look at 'force' & 'assist' as the same thing, either way the snake will slowly starve unless 'you' get food into it.
I would describe the difference as 'assist feeding is a snake that can be force fed very easy with little assistance', where as 'force feeding is a snake that needs assisting until the prey item is basically out of sight' _________________

While we are on the subject.....
If anyone on here can consider themselves an 'expert' (I hate that word) on snake feeding, I wouldn't mind a professional opinion.
A local garden centre has a small reptile section. I do not hold the husbandry skills of pet shop manager in very high regard to start with, but a couple of weeks ago we were told that he had beed FORCE feeding very young non-feeding corns with a makeup brush. The makeup brush at its THIN end was about twice the girth of the snakes.
After the complaints we made to the general manager, he is no longer doing this, but I need some documentation on best practises for non feeders and for force feeding. I am expecting some stuff from my vet, but if anyone knows of any other documents on the web I would appreciate any links you may have. I have searched anapsid, but I can't seem to find anything relevant.
Cheers,
Si _________________

I dont know if you will find any. The majority of the common and accepted practices by those deemed as experts is often based on years of trial and error, with almost none of it written down anywhere.
Not very helpfull i know but i fear its the best you will get _________________ TFA

pretty much as Dan says I guess.
It's very hard to actually write down a force feeding procedure as it changes from species to species and even snake to snake.
I have had to use all manner of 'tools' to get certain snakes to keep prey down or rather get prey past the point of 'no return'. Sometimes force feeding can look pretty brutal but that's why it's 'force' feeding, really results (or failure)are only thing you can base any judgement on. _________________
