I don't see why keeping a baby royal in a 3ft viv would be a problem IF it's well set up. The problem with larger vivs for younger snakes is that there is normally too many 'open' spaces, so the snake would feel very exposed and in danger. This is easy to overcome by placing a mass of cork tube hides or other hides in there. The larger viv does have the advantage of allowing more temp zones and humid areas (ie hides all the way along the viv at both the hot, cool and middle, plus space for a humid hide).

Saying all that I still keep my baby royals in the small 'cadbury' type tub and move them out at 300-400g's into large contico.

Depends entirely on the royal - I have one who went straight into a four foot viv as a baby and it never caused a problem!!

Yep, depends on the set up. In theory, if you had suitable hides and temps so that the snake felt both secure and comfortable enough to feed a royal could be kept in a 20ft viv.

Alternatively an animal could be kept in a small box with no hide and hence no security, and/or with incorrect temps and refuse to feed.

It`s true though, wide open and exposed spaces should be avoided if you want the animals to feel secure enough to feed. Wink
