Does anyone know how much a DNA test on a reptile costs to determine gender please? Also what is involved? _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Not much help I know, but I often had to send owls feathers for DNA testing. Had to pluck out a breast feather using sterile tweezers, bag in into a strerile bag, mark the bag with the sex of the person doing the test and date it. I asked why a simple blood test couldnt be used and was told that taking blood was too stressful !!! which I disputed as I felt that netting a bird, restraining it, yanking out feathers etc must cause far more stress. Hope you get answers Rick love Jan |

As far as I am aware there isn't yet a commercially viable DNA test for reptiles like there is for many bird species.
I hope there is sooner, rather than later though, especially for certain lizard species.

Don't think you'll be able to find anyone who can do it, they need something to base their results on and I don't think there's been any work carried out to get that far.
Mark Seward was trying to pioneer it for gila monsters years ago but think he has since given up _________________

Thanks everyone. It is for Mellors chameleons. Females are smaller than males, and the horn, occipital lobes, and dorsal crests are less developed. But in young Mellors this is hard to gauge.
I have heard that another method used to sex them is by the colour and markings under the occipital lobes, I don't know however how much of this is just myth or fact. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk
