hey everyone,
some of you may know, most of you probably won't but i keep allot of tropical fish, i have just had a big clean out and i have a few spare tanks, and i was just wondering what i could put in them amphibian wise and care.
the tanks are:
- a 24''x12''x12''
- 2 18''x10''x10''
- a tall hexagonal tank measuring 18 inches tall and about 12 inches across the middle.
- a small 'pet home' measuring 15''x8''x10''
All measurements are lxwxh.
The species i like are:
- Surinam toads
- mottled shovel nosed frogs
- amazon milk frogs
- Vietnamese mossy frogs
- Budgetts frog
- cranwells horned frog
- crocodile newt
- tomato frogs
- asian bullfrog
could i keep any of these in any of the tanks? Any more suggestions? any info on the above species?
(i have kept amphibians before, i Had some FBTs and fire bellied newts, and red spotted newt)

if you would like my honest opion i would go for milk frogs mate i like them alot or a horned frog they are nice and easy to keep as rick tells me also i like tomatoe frogs i nearly bought 2 was soo tempting

anyone got info on the other species especially surinam toads, budgetts frogs and shovel nosed frogs?

Surinam toads are totally aquatic and so would need to be kept in an aquarium. Budgetts frog`s are a pretty undemanding captive and can be kept in a similar manner to horned frogs or African bullfrogs. The shovel nosed are slightly more specialised and I wouldn`t recomend them for starters. Maybe try a few other species first.
The main problem with using fish tanks as amphibian housing, terrestrial ones anyway, is the lack of ventilation. The air can only get in at the top and can create quite a stale atmosphere. It`s just my opinion but I much prefer to use purpose made glass amphibian tanks with ventilation strips and sliding doors.

Not exactly - most of the year Budgett's live fully aquatic.

My opinion differs, I've always used standard glass tanks for all sorts of amphibians and never had a problem with stale air or co2 build up. It really is just a matter of opinion / preferance there is nothing that should put you off keeping amphibians in standard glass aquariums with a suitable lid.
Other than the 24x12x12" your tanks are too small to keep the species you mentioned and for some even the 24x12x12 is too small so if you want to keep amphibs in those other tanks you should look at some smaller species.

I know that you use aquarium tanks a lot in your set ups Andrew so was expecting a reply. I prefer the cross ventilation available in the glass vivs that I mentioned but as you say the main consideration when using a fish tank would be a suitable lid. I still prefer the air flow of cross ventilation myself (not too much of it of course), but perhaps you could show the thread starter the type of lid that you use so that they could perhaps make a decision. 
My Budgett`s frogs were kept in set ups that were two thirds land, one third water at a daytime temperature of 78 -80f and night time of around 70f. They spent a lot of their time buried with just their eyes showing much like a horned frog does and had voracious appetites. I was keeping them for a friend and as such only had them 6 months but found them very undemanding and easy to please. In that time of course I was not attempting to breed them so no doubt you are right and they would spend more time in the water if so. Water was available for the two that I had (I kept them seperately as they were so aggressive at dinner time I thought that the larger of the two may get a bit ambitious when seeing the smaller one`s movement!) all the time but they rarely used it.
Off topic a tad here, the living clump moss that I had from you (bit of a free plug here)  is doing really well. Any more available soon?

thanks for the replies.
I thought that the 24x12x12 would be big enough for surinam toads?
I made a mistake the two 18 inch ones are 12 inches wide not 10.
How much space do shovel nosed frogs need? any info? i have read the care sheet on pollywog.
I really like budgetts frogs how much space do they need?
Pollywog, do you sell surinam toads or budgetts frogs?

This is the type of lid I use on most of my setups:
The ventilation strips down either side can be opened and closed to control the amount of ventilation needed, on other tanks I have simple sliding cover glass'. As said it’s all down to preference but I see no reason to change to front opening tanks. The only time I would suggest using front openers over standard glass tanks is if height is a problem and you can’t get into them from above.
For the health of Budgett's frogs it is very important to follow a cycle giving the frogs an aquatic lifestyle for most of the year and an aestivation period in soil for a few months in order to avoid respiratory problems. Although they may be kept in a similar manor to Horned Frogs for a while for the long term health of the animal it's best to follow the cycle, if your frogs stayed mostly on land I would imagine they were ready and wanting to aestivate.

Yes when I can get them, we have a group of Budgett's here that will be going into aestivation at the end of the month and hopefully we will get good results from them next year. I also have one of the dwarf species of Pipa breeding that I can add you to the waiting list for if you are interested.

The general rule for Lepidobatrachus and Ceratophrys is that the floor space of the tank should be at least 8-10x the size of the animal.

I make the centre part of the lids, it's just a perspex frame with fruit fly proof mesh in the middle.
