hi I'm new on here but I've have my beardie for nearly a year now and was wondering how old does he have to be to breed with him? also i want to buy him a girlfriend is it OK to add a female to his new enclosure that I'm getting him? is one or two females better to stop him harassing one all the time

hello there your male will probable be able to breed now but its best to leave him a few more months to gain maturity you can get a female 2 years or more for breeding her . i personally would have her on her own as the male will just want to mate her all the time i only introduce my male when its time for breeding and take her out after 2 weeks for the rest of the season. don't mean to put you off breeding them but it is time consuming and the market is flooded at this present time so you might have a hard time shifting them. what ever you do i hope it goes well for you lee Very Happy

cheers i wasn't thinking of breeding them just yet just wanted to know about the living arrangement of them first. i was gonna keep them separate like you said but just thought I'd see what was the best thing to do as i need to know what size Viv I'll be needing

Size, weight & condition are the important things to consider when breeding any reptile....age rarely has any relevance.

I have bred many bearded dragons from 6 months old, not had a single problem and all clutches had very high fertility.

By giving a 'random' min age for breeding you are basically aiming higher than what may or may not be acceptable just to ensure that all animals are up to size etc (fine, but some times way off the mark)

I would agree with Scott on this one, and talking about reptiles in general rather than just bearded dragons. Captivebred reptiles do not, (well should not anyway) have to contend with parasites and also tend to have an ever ready supply of nutritious food available so in virtually every case should be up to size and weight in a shorter space of time than a wild animal.

An animal raised on a less intensive feeding regime may be still be undersized for breeding at a far greater age than an animal fed more regularly and with food of higher nutritve content.

The feeding regime experiments that have been conducted with various python species is a good example of this. Size and weight are the criteria rather than age. Wink

sorry Scott but i will have to agree to disagree there mate while the condition and size of the reptile is very important breeding at 6 months is way to early in my opinion theres no way that a bearded dragon is fully grown at that age they need all the calcium the get at that stage of development for there bones not for supplying support for shelling the eggs Ive also found that breeding to early and over breeding cuts there life by 2 to 3 years. these are just my experiences mate so don't take it the wrong way Very Happy

No worries Wink

So what should the length and weight be before breeding (in your opinion)?

well i dint go by length as such as the sizes in beardies is so variable but i do go by a rule of 18 months and 300 grams for breeding and 2 weeks with the male and then remove the female for good for that season. but if she is not gravid i will place her back with the male till i get the result I'm after.

i would agree on lee with this 1 peeps , as loads of breeding advice iv had off people who have bred loads of successful clutches have always told me , both bds should be almost the same size , around 18 monthes and no younger , so thats my opinion but i would say it sounds lodgical for them to be fully growen adults as surly the female needs loads of room to have eggs in here body ????
