Took some pics today, tried to capture the beauty but as you will know the camera is a poor substitute for the real thing.

Beautiful! Simply stunning! Is that her enclosure or just something you used to take pics of her in? I just couldn't help noticing that there's no substrate?

Yes that is the enclosure, there is substrate in the enclosure but from that little spot I was cleaning so I took out the substrate with the crap on.

I use only 1-2 inches of substrate so that it is easy to clean, when breeding the females have a nest box, I prefer to use a big nest box rather than making the whole enclosure one big nest. I think the monitor prefer this too but other people may do things different. I also think hygiene is very important so it is easier to keep clean.

Thanks for that Sean. I personally use deep substrate in all of my varanus enclosures (dirt and sand for the ackies and Albig & Compost and leaf litter for the doreanus and salvator) They all have numerous burrows and hiding places and have a wide range of temps and humidity.

Have you ever experienced any problems with stress with any of your animals? Any breeding difficulties?

I'm not trying to tell you hoe to keep your animals or anything I'm just genuinely interested about what methods of husbandry work and what don't.

What species do you keep?

I have not had any problems with stress or breeding. I do not handle my monitors, the only time I do is when I am moving one from A to B in order to breed or full clean. I prefer not to pick them up. My animals are quite calm.

I only keep 2 species now spenceri and griseus, its a lot easier for me. Plus I think I have very interesting species and easy to care for too.

Hi sean, great monitors. what size do they get? & what sort of temprament do they have.

They are what I call medium sized monitors but some individuals can get quite large. Mine judging by the parents size are not too big, so I think they will grow between 3-4ft depending on sex. They are quite food orientated like other members of the Australian varanus group like panoptes, varius and gouldii for example.
