Just noticed all the family Poecilotheria (ornamental tarantulas) is listed CITES appendix 2,the reason this species is endangered is due too deforestation and loss off natural habitat, isnt restricting collection of such animals defeating the object, if theirs no were for a animal too live its going too die, I would of thought captive breeding of such animals would be encouraged as otherwise their just going to disapear
I may be way off or missing something but if I dont ask Ill never know
any opinions ? |

Matt, very few animals are actually under threat due to the 'pet trade' the import % of CITES restricted reptiles is way under 5% for live trade. The biggest % is for the skin trade.
You're quite right that habitat loss is the biggest reason for animal extinction, the food trade is also a major part (bush meat and the Asian markets).
Another stupid attitude is from some of the 'animal rights' campaigners, they believe that if there is nowhere for a species to live in the wild then it's better off extinct than in captivity (check out PETA!)
Can you also believe that Zoos kill or destroy eggs / young of many CITES species because they can not house the young and choose not to breed them or destroy eggs rather than let them end up in private collections.
Private keepers / breeders produce far more endangered reptiles each year than all the zoos put together. _________________

thanks for the info scott, certainly seems our hobby is used as a scape goat, seems like a cover up by those in power make the people think something is being done while issues such as global warming, deforestation, conservation ect are skipped over
certainly got me thinking

My personal opinion is that all us people on here are all trying to preserve some wonderful herps as one day in captivity they may all get wiped out where as look at what some people own on here
Scott owns alsorts and does a great job with them
Rick has some rare stuff and i know is doing his very best to try and keep these species alive and kickin
pete has some rare stuff aswell i think
sorry to mention names but if u wish to follow up what iv said go ahead and sorry if some people also do the mentioned above things and i didnt mention ur name
So in my eyes keep up the good work people and keep these things and this passion we share alive _________________ http://www.beardieboard.com/ |
