I think this is a subject more geared to the owners preference rather than the monitor concerned. I personally use U.V. Mercury vapor bulbs but whether I see any difference is questionable, because on the monitors that do not have U.V. I see no difference in the behaviour and alround health to the ones that have it. Plus I do not know if you have ever measured the U.V. output of these lights on the market but even a cloudy day in Britain emits more ultra violet light, so therefore the output of such lamps on the market is minimil in my opinion but on the other hand I don't think it does any real harm to use it. I think there are far more decisive factors like husbandry and diet. Also regarding acanthurus now I read that certain parts of Australia receive the amongst the highest levels of U.V. on earth but I would think that acanthurus would spend quite some time during the heat of the day down a burrow or under shelter.

Totally agree with you Sean.

I do use UV tubes in my vivs and the monitors can actually lay on them (they often lay there for hours with no burns or ill effects).

I am new to spiny tails and would also agree that one thread would be good as it will help me to get as much info as possible in one go.

Substrate question please: Recommendations and depth. thanks.

I use an inch of dry calcium sand. I also add a nest box of damp play sand 12"'s deep. They can dig and burrow in that all they need.

I use UV for mine. Went with the "better to be safe than sorry" approach for him, as I reasoned he's from a country which gets a lot of sun. Even if an 8.0 isn't great, its better than nothing.
Another reason is that he spends a huge amount of time in the open.
Last but not least, I did it for my benefit too. As the Viv is in the lounge, I wanted to make a feature of it. The lighting helps this.

As for substrate etc, my set up is mentioned in the "Viv size" thread.

Well I tend to favour UV irrespective: It will not do any harm I would not think.

If you test the volume of light outside using a lux meter at midday in the summer you are talking between 50,000 and 100,000 lux depending on where in the world you are. A Zoomed 5.0 wiht reflector and 60w spot light creates a combined lux reading of about 1,900 lux.

So unlikely to overdo it!

I use about 10" of soil and sand mix and my ackies have established an amazing network of burrows. Mine prefer eating crickets and locust as well as pinkies. I also use UV but as they spend a lot of there time in there burrows i don't think it has much effect. in fact they seem to prefer coming out at night! Its great to watch them hunt under the red lights!

Here are some old pic of my 4x2x2
