I think this is a subject more geared to the owners preference rather than the monitor concerned. I personally use U.V. Mercury vapor bulbs but whether I see any difference is questionable, because on the monitors that do not have U.V. I see no difference in the behaviour and alround health to the ones that have it. Plus I do not know if you have ever measured the U.V. output of these lights on the market but even a cloudy day in Britain emits more ultra violet light, so therefore the output of such lamps on the market is minimil in my opinion but on the other hand I don't think it does any real harm to use it. I think there are far more decisive factors like husbandry and diet. Also regarding acanthurus now I read that certain parts of Australia receive the amongst the highest levels of U.V. on earth but I would think that acanthurus would spend quite some time during the heat of the day down a burrow or under shelter.

I think that you will find Nick that Predator was just suggesting that perhaps next time you could put all your questions together if they relate to the same subject, (such as in this case, Monitor husbandry) into the same thread. It would just make it a more interesting read and one that other forum members would all benefit from and enjoy as well as taking up less space. Wink

Good luck with your spiny tails. Have you got some in the pipeline or are you just thinking about getting some at this stage?

I am new to spiny tails and would also agree that one thread would be good as it will help me to get as much info as possible in one go.

Substrate question please: Recommendations and depth. thanks.
