Right, been playing around with a spread sheet to show different outcomes from different breedings.
There's 9 different breedings worked out inc;
Co-doms (pastels & spiders)
Double Hets
Triple Hets
Co-dom to recessive (spider to albino)
Have a look, if anyone can find any mistakes let me know, thanks

Gee, you can breed those easy - just breed together a pied pastel striped caramel albino to a pied pastel striped ivory spider, and voila, 1/4 of the clutch would be super pastel striped albino sipider pieds het for caramel and ivory |

Scott, the outcome you get in the punnets is basically right, you just do it the wrong way or you write it the wrong way. For example, albino x normal: An albino is homozygous for the mutation, aa, a het has Aa, a normal AA. Now in all cases you see two letters, those stand for two copies of the gene in the genome. When you make sperm or eggs, there is only one copy in each, both parents contribute half to their offspring. Now I know you probably know this, but that is what you put in the squares, the possible copies each parent can contribute
So, for albino x normal, it is aa x AA, the albino contributes an a or an a, the normal A or A
A A
a aA aA
a aA aA
het x het makes Aa xAa, or to put it in a square
A a
A AA Aa
a Aa aa
one albino, one normal, two hets
Luckily you did start to do that in later squares
Another thing I don't find correct is the use of normal (N) for instance in spider x albino. Spider is a dominant mutation, so you could use an S, but the normal gene would then be s, same gene, but inherits recessive compared to the dominant mutation.
So, spider normal would be SsAA, albino would be ssaa
sa sa sa sa
SA SsAa SaAa SsAa SsAa
sA ssAa ssAa ssAa ssAa
SA SaAa SsAa SsAa SsAa
sA ssAa ssAa ssAa SsAa
So, like you said 50% spider (Ss), 50% normal (ss), all het for albino (Aa)
but this would be the correct way to calculate that
I now this looks a bit like nitpicking, but if you know the correct way to calculate these things and why you do it in such a way you can easily calculate any combination of mutations. |

cheers Ron, very helpful. As I said in an earlier post I wasn't too sure how to lay out the genes etc _________________
