Hi,

Earlier in the summer during the hot weather (where's it gone?), I had a couple of crestie hatchlings which never really got going after hatching, and died a week or ten days later.

Has this ever happened to anyone else, and do I write it off as hot weather effects? I kept them outside my reptile room, but even so, the temp may have been in the mid 80's F on warmer days. Is there a knack with starting these off? I ask because I have some more due to hatch soon...

Cheers,
Mark.

hatchlings do die quick if they dehydrate. I keep mine on 4" of damp peat (compacted down) for about 4 weeks, then move them across to newspaper.

ok, thanks Scott. In terms of food; I was offering flightless fruitflies, small crickets and tiny red runners - not sure if they were really taking these though. Do you use crested gecko diet/fruit babyfood at all with newly hatcheds?

When they've just hatch I put the babies into a cricket box (one baby per box). I keep things quite sparce, just kitchen roll on the bottom and something for them to hide in (a piece of plastic pipe). I squirt the kitchen roll until it is damp (sprayed with warm water). I leave the baby in that set-up for about four/five days, keeping the kitchen roll damp. Then I transfer the baby to a small pet-pal, which is decorated with branches, leaves etc. I then offer size 4 brown crickets to the baby. I find this menthod works well for me. I do this for my aurics as well. Hope this helps. Very Happy

Thanks Jackie, that does help!

One question - how big is a 'size 4' cricket?

Cheers,
Mark.

I would say you could use something a bit bigger in food size (I use about the same size as Jackie said), I also DO use CGD right from the beginning, gives both the lizards AND the crickets something to feed on.
