Rear-fanged, but not on the DWA.
Apparently, the venom toxicity is quite strong!
Anyone know the LD50 or anything?

I'm fairly sure that the venom is similar to timber rattler venom, so not strong at all really.
Certainly won't be on the LD50 chart, I think they tend to kill by constriction as well though.
Definitly venomous though, main problem is that as they are strong snakes, they will be able to hang on for a little while to produce venom. Most people hardly have a reaction to the venom but a few have suffered quite badly. I believe John Foden had a bite off one and still had problems years later.

"they are strong snakes"
Yep, bear that in mind. I know someone who was holding one by its tail, and unlike most venomous snakes, had the strengh to double back and bite his clothing. Didn't quite get him.
Hopefully, you won't get bit though _________________

Apparently in captivity their venom is quite weak. I believe it gets its toxicity in the wild from the toads it eats, but on a diet of rodents, as in captive reared animals, the venom is a lot less potent. |

Nearlly every snake I know can double back on itself to bite!! - especially venomous snakes! (Think of nearlly every elapid spp. bar Acanthopis, also think of Dispholidus and several Viperids (especially some of the Bothrops!))
As for the false water cobra's, great snakes. Do have a strong, vice-like bite so stay away from the bitey end Absolutely fantastic feeding response almost guaranteed...may even merge on the borderline of demonic. Don't tend to constrict when feeding, takes up too much time - just start wolfing it down! _________________ Regards James Stroud |

We've just had a nice male in, he's only about 5ft but seems fairly placid - Rich was a little disappointed. |
