Indeed but then you probably live in Australia. Slightly different being in the UK.

It is like anything if is hard to get you will pay a tidy premium.

Hey Dave I take your point but not all the monitors out of Oz are smuggled maybe the majority are but what about the legal ones sent to zoological organizations and then bred these sometimes end up in the private sector. I was told that it is not impossible to get legal monitors from your country if you have the right connections in place.

Sean, most of the Australian varanids in private hands overseas are the descendants of smuggled animals, with a few exceptions.

It is possible for a zoological institution to get reptiles from here, yes, but private individuals can't get monitors out of Australia legally.

Of course, with the right amount of 'laundering' many of the smuggled animals or their descendants become 'legal', mainly because proving otherwise would require too much time and money on the part of the relevant authorities.

I'd be willing to bet that the perenties in private hands overseas are smuggled animals, or the descendants of smuggled animals. There aren't many institutions outside of Australia breeding them.

Yeah, that's the truth! Mind you, the lacies seem to be creeping up again ATM, there's been a few advertised of late for up around the $1000 mark. They must be getting trendy or something Laughing Of course, I think long & hard about paying even $500 for a lacie, but that may simply be the "thrifty" scottish background coming out! Embarassed
