I'm looking to get a few White's Tree Frogs but have read a few caresheets and they all seem to think different things.

Should there be water in the bottom of their tank or substrate?
Can you use gravel or should it be bark like?
And what size of tank should be used when keeping 4 or 5?

Any pictures of setups would be really appreciated too... Confused

Should there be water in the bottom of their tank or substrate?

Substrate, bark and moss in my opinion. WTFs are not good swimmers, so they will just need a small waterbowl that they can easily climb out of, changed daily.

Can you use gravel or should it be bark like?

Bark / Moss is good, on a layer of soil / cocohusk (expanded brick). Gravel would likely be swallowed, so you dont want substrate that is too small.

And what size of tank should be used when keeping 4 or 5?

Why so many? These guys grow quite big Razz

I's suggest no more than 3 and keep them in a 4foot tank, no smaller.

Just MY opinion, errrrr, Miow ?

I have nine, because I like them Laughing

I would suggest for 5 whites one of the new range large exo terras, the newest and biggest one that they do it measures: 24 x 18 x 24 inches. I have two of these. If you x 24x18x24 you come up with 10,368, per whites you need approx 1,620. So for 5 you would need 8,100. So the exo terra would be fine and allow plenty of living space.

They love to climb being a tree frog, so height is as important as floor space.

Mine enjoy mopani wood, cork bark anything of varying thicknesses to climb on, I also have a small hollowed out log with holes in it all the way up, I place this vertically in their tank and they love to climb up inside of it!

Substrate, no ideal substrate, depends how fancy and creative you want to be, you could go the whole hog and use hydra lyca 2 -3 inches as a base add a bug bed type substrate on top of that, add custodian insects which will eat the detritus and also provide some food for the whites (not their sole supply of food), such as woodlice, springtails etc.

The lyca will provide gaps to aerate the substrate, good for growing live plants in, will retain nice humidity levels, create your own mini eco environment, naturalistic set ups are a good way to go IMHO. Add live moss, use a freshwater arcadia tube for plant growth. In a couple of months their tank will look very alive! The custodian insects will cut down on cleaning schedules, the plants will receive nutrition from the poop etc. Nice live plants to aid humidity and oxygenation. Plenty of things to climb on and hid in. Sorted! Could even add an exo terra cave for them!

Personally I prefer the Australian Whites tree frog Litoria caerulea, as opposed to the Indonesian form. Mine seem to thrive at 78f durring the day, with a drop to approx 72f at night. If your room does not have these temp variations then a heat Matt placed externally covering no more than a third of the tank base will do the job, use a mat stat day and night version.

Water bowls, well I have heard that some people allow quite a large body of water, and that their whites enjoy swimming in this. I have not tried this so can not pass comment. I use a very large exo terra water bowl, just right for mine and they enjoy this.

I am not saying the above way of keeping them is the only way, there are many variations upon a theme.

Okay that sounds good thanks Gary and Rick.

whats the difference between the Australian Whites tree frog Litoria caerulea and the Indonesian ones apart from when you google pictures of them to Australian ones look less fat??

Their tank seems quite easy and even easier once every things had time to settle in.

I think they're definitely next on the list...

The Australians are smaller and grow to approx: 10cm's for females males 85-95 mm's. Thye are usually green turquoise colours.

The Indonesians are larger and have pronounced ridges over their eyes droopy folds of skin (supratympanic ridges ), the Aussies have these to but far less pronounced. The IND'S are a darker green to.
