Hi Rick. I moved the eggs from the parents tank as soon as I suspected they'd been laid- if you dont actually see her doing it this means you have to dig in likely spots ie in the corners at the back and at the base of plants. The reason I remove them is simply for my benefit to be honest, I can watch their progress, dampen the vermiculite when necessary, protect them from any potential cricket attacks,- I rear mine on vermiculite in cricket tubs damp not wet and just place them dated inside a box- again the box is for my benefit as it takes up less space then a load of tubs on a shelf. They were all just left at room temps.
My ones tended to lay about a month after breeding- the hatch dates do seem to vary considerably with my shortest being 45 days and the longest 60 days.Unfortunatley I have had a few hatch prematurley which I can only put down to the practice of leaving the hatchling to roam about in the hatching tub for a while- this seems to spur other eggs to hatch- a mistake on my part. I say this because I am now convinced 2 different females use the same tunnel for eggs and I am sure I have incubated 2 different clutches in the same box. Now I remove any hatchlings as soon as I find them. The new borns are placed in a tiny tub- no bigger than 3 inches long by the same high, for 48 hours ,simply just to recover- they do not feed before this time and do not shed before before their 1st feed either.Next time I will seperate the eggs into sizes .The eggs take on a different appearance prior to hatching- theres no sweating or starring at the ends of the eggs- they just pop their heads out! The eggs tend to take on a darkish grey appearance and one end goes quite opaque in colour. Hope that answers any questions- of course like every thing else, folk do things differently and as this is the 1st rep I have ever bred a lot of it was trial and error really- but it seems I did something right!!!! I have been watching these babies and realised they will soon be ready to go to their approved new homes.I dont mind confessing ther'll be tears before bedtime when they do!My biggest "problem" with Pygmies is their all to short life span some of my adults now look old and are a lot slower than they used to be. Still thats natures way. I am looking forward to breeding a whole new generation though so will be looking around for some fresh bloodlines to breed with these babies.
Love Jan. PS Forgot to say some of mine laid 4 clutches and some only 2 but I am told they can produce up to 6 per year.
