i have been researching on the net and found this system on chameleon journals
i'm wondering if this would be enough to keep a viv humidified and would it eliminate the need for a dripper
anyway here is my little design

the viv will be front and top screened with a fibreglas gel coated back sides and bottom

Well if it works and allows droplets of water to accumulate then I cant see why not, for what species of cham?


Some humidifiers churn out quite hot steam, does this one do you know? or is it chameleon specific?

I have a bog standard humidifier for my conservatory, just to help prevent a dry atmosphere. The water heats up and is forced out and quite hot at the point of initial contact but soon condenses and is cool. I suppose if the initial humidifer outlet is some way away from the viv by the time it enters the viv it may be cool enough not to do any harm.

I must admit I have not seen such a system used for a cham. But the theory of it could work well, not sure. For multiple cham vivs some people use a pumped spray system.

I rely upon the good old hozelock killa hand held spray and zoomed drippers both of which work but are time consuming when you have many vivs.

If you can get a chance to see the system in action that would be great. I would be interested to know if it works. But for me with a few vivs I think the best option will be a spray sytem at some point.

I am interested in your viv, what is fibreglas gel a liquid fibreglass that you paint on then it solidifies? Where can one get this gel? What will the main carcass of your viv be made from? What are you using as vent material for the front and top? Interogation over, but this interests me, I take it the viv is a self-build project?


Has anyone else come across the humidifier system in use?

ok i will explain the fibre glass stuff to you.
you build a box and drill a hole for a drain. then you line the box with fibreglass and apply the resin. on top of that you paint the gelcoat. to that gelcoat you add a parafin wax that will make the gelcoat so smooth the water will pearl of it. just like your freshly waxed car after a rain shower.
only thing is you have to let it cure for 2 weeks or so. you have to as it will leach styrene for aproximatly that time period. that could poison ur cham. after that time it is 100% save. done it to a pond once and no fish have died yet
as a front you use a screen door and you can add a screen top if you are worried about stale air

it will last forever
easy to clean
no heatloss like in screen vivs
very solid when it is all finnished
cons
its a bit o work and if you do it for the first time it can be a very long progress and you ,may get messy.
some ppl are better at it then others
if you like getting high on fumes it may be a pro but the headache coming with it isn't
allways use this stuff outside

Great thank you! I shall have a good read of all of that! May even have ago at building a few for the herp room conversion! I can be quite practical and will enjoy doing something like that, time allowing.
