Just checked on my fbt's before giving them a feed and found most of them dead. I've changed there water and put a fan on in the room as it has been hot this afternoon but would the heat alone cause this. Any help would be great, thanks Jay

Sorry to hear that Jay.

How old/what size are the toads?

How deep is the water they are in?

What is the temperature in thier enclosure at the hottest part of the day?

Tanks peter, they are kept in about 5mm deep water so as they can stand in it without going under. They are kept at room temp today was quite warm so temp was about 30 to 34. They were purchased from rick about 6 to 8 weeks ago from his last batch. Hope this helps. Crying or Very sad

Sounds like it got way too hot Jay sorry to say. Sad

The depth you have them at is ideal, but that temp got way too high and such a tiny animal doesn`t take long at all too succomb to overheating I am afraid.

This weather has been an absolute pain as regards to keeping amphibians comfortable Rolling Eyes

. I don`t know how many times I have moved my dart frogs down to the brick built cupboard under the stairs here which stays at 78f luckily.

All I can suggest is if you have any lighting for them, switch it off to lower the heat, and if possible look at relocating them to somewhere cooler temporarily away from windows that overheat quickly etc.

My next investment, ( as I have increased my amphibian collection lately ) will undoubtedly be an air conditioning system for my frog room.

I have some of the same batch from the same source, and all that they are housed in at the moment is a poly box with about 3-4ml of water with cork bark islands and moss. They are kept in the coolest part of the house and I change the water and replace it with dechlorinated (left to stand for 48hrs) ph 7 water every 2-3 days. I hope this helps.

I forgot to say that more regular than usual spraying will help keep things cooler for them too .

I thought as much. Thanks for the help peter i've just moved them and have left instuctions with the wife to leave a fan on near there enclosure thoughout the day when its hot . There was a post in the crestie forum a while back about putting a bottle of frozen water in there vivs to keep them cool do you think it may work for the toads.

Yes that was my pal Jim`s suggestion and a very good one too.

Jay, have you got an aquarist shop near to you? The reason I ask is that you can grab poly boxes fro them for free. I and a lot of other people make reptile incubators out of them as they hold heat. They also hold coolness!

I just checked the temp on my fbt`s poly box with my temp gun and it`s 24c or 77f in it which is fine. Elsewhere in the room is 27c 0r 81f.

The frozen bottle method sounds like an excellant idea too though I have not tried it myself.

Again thanks for the help pete. I'll try the bottle of frozen water tomorrow and keep an eye on the temp. I'll also see about a trip to the aquarium shop to ask for a poly box.

By the way, I don`t intend keeping mine in a poly box forever, Laughing

I just thought it was the easiest and most suitable method whilst the toads were at this delicate stage and whilst this weather was as it is. Keep your chin up and I know Rick still has a few healthy looking youngsters if you want replacements.

Amphibians and heat don`t mix very well. I learnt the hard way too. All the best mate Wink
